Project Lasso Adds Support for EMC Celerra File Servers

San Jose, CA - June 14, 2006 - A month after its release at Interop 2006, Project Lasso, a viable open source alternative to Microsoft's more proprietary Windows event collection infrastructure, is experiencing growing support from the global log management and intelligence community, including an official repository on SourceForge and support for EMC Celerra File Servers. Project Lasso is being driven by LogLogic, the leader in turning log data into actionable information and insight for compliance, operations and risk mitigation. LogLogic was recently named to the Red Herring 100 and LogLogic Series 3 LX 2000 was named the winner in the LMI category in InfoSecurity's Product Excellence Awards 2006.

"Bringing Windows event logs under management is crucial to a cross platform compliance strategy, allowing reporting to a variety of business controls, requirements and regulations," said James Governor, principal analyst at RedMonk, "LogLogic is open sourcing its Windows-based technology, Project Lasso, to foster a Microsoft event management community in the space."

"After only one month since its release, there are close to one thousand downloads of Project Lasso," said Dominique Levin, vice president of product management, LogLogic. "We're excited to see that the activity level on SourceForge remains extremely high and the community has been very supportive. We are starting to see Project Lasso used by many IT professionals to centrally collect Windows events from different applications, including the popular file servers of LogLogic partner EMC."

The official repository for Project Lasso has been established on SourceForge, where all project releases as well as source code, are now available. Developers can contribute in any form, including development, testing and documentation. Project Lasso is available on Sourceforge.net as 'lassolog' and the software is available under the GNU Public License (GPL).

LogLogic has also successfully collected audit logs from EMC's Celerra file server using Project Lasso. EMC's Celerra systems are high performance IP storage systems that support NFS, CIFS and iSCSI. With Project Lasso's remote collection mechanism, LogLogic was able to collect the extensive file system audit logs provided by Celerra. Project Lasso does not require an agent solution to be installed on the Celerra server. These audit logs are essential to many companies' security and compliance projects as they contain detailed records of information access.

LogLogic architected and implemented Project Lasso to provide centralized log management, eliminating the need to manage individual log collection agents and greatly reducing the impact on monitored servers in terms of storage and processing. The Project Lasso reference design release is the first in a series of community initiatives from LogLogic intended to encourage developers, IT professionals and other technologists to participate in and accelerate the technology development process around log files and their management. Project Lasso will also be offered and supported as part of LogLogic's award-winning log management and intelligence platform.

Next month, the SANS Institute and LogLogic are sponsoring the only major conference on what works in log management, to be held in Washington, D.C. on July 12-14. More than 20 speakers, nearly all users, will share the lessons they have learned on how log management helps IT operations beyond compliance and security, including many mission-critical topics, such as making Windows logging effective.
